this morning an escalation of the fighting in ukraine. it appears ukrainian military has launched a major assault against pro-russian forces in eastern ukraine. the target is an insurgent stronghold about 100 miles west of russian. fighting is ongoing around several points around the city. they've seized government buildings in and around a dozen cities. the government says at least one helicopter was shot down. one pilot was captured. the other was killed. ukrainian government says surface-to-air missiles were used. counteri ining russia claims th uprising was led by civilians. yesterday vladimir putin. hour after that ukraine's military draft was renewed. earlier this week ukraine's acting president said his security forces were helpless against the pro-russian

insurgents. >> this morning the acting malaysian minister says he's sure the search for malaysian flight 370 is on the right track but yesterday he released a report on the disappearance. it documented the confusion on the jet's location. susan mcginnis is in washington with the details. good morning, susan. >> good morning, wendy. there was a press conference this morning where they talked about their long-term plan for finding this plane. the malaysian defense minister came out and now he says that the search could take 8 to 12 months, but that he is confident they will find the plane. nearly eight weeks into the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370, officials from malaysia, australia, and france are vowing to press ahead to find the plane. >> i'm quietly confident that we are on the right track.

>> while the aerial hunt was called off earlier this week authorities plan to expand the underwater search. an unmanned navy submersible that's been scanning a remote part of continuedian ocean would find any wreckage. >> i'm not saying the chances of finding it -- i think the probability is lower than it was when we started the searcsearch >> on thursday they revealed a preliminary report. the five-page document confirmed radar tracked the plane as it turned west but that air traffic controllers did not realize the boyi boeing 777 was missing until hours after it doisappeared. family members remain frustrated at the lack of progress after weeks of waiting in a hotel, they were advised thursday to return home. the families expressed a lot of

anguish that those information centers at the hotels they're staying at will be closed. they'll have to get their updates at their homes. wendy, malaysia, australia, and chinese officials are going to meet early next week in australia about the next steps in this search. >> all right. susan mcginnis in washington. thank you very much. a subway crash in south accident, many of them as they jumped off the trains onto the tracks. most of the injuries were not serious. overnight firefighters got the upper hand on a wildfire burning east of los angeles. the fire is now more than 50% contained and is no longer helded toward residential areas.

there has been no damage to property or injuries. >> this morning the bulk of a slow-moving persistent storm that drenched an area from the southeast to new england is finally clearing out, but some wet weather remains and more flooding is still a possibility. alexis christoforous reports from hard hit new york. >> reporter: high floodwaters in philadelphia turned a city bus into a submarine. three people had to be rescued. firefighters used small boats to ferry stranded residents and pets from a flooded apartment building. 24 hours of nonstop rain forced residents in manville, new jersey, to paddle around in canoes. dozens of cars had to be fished out of a parking lot turned into a pond while homes were completely cut off from dry land. investigators and cleanup crews were at the scene of a landslide in baltimore.

cars and mud were sent tumbling 75 feet down a hill, but no one was injured. a landslide north of new york covered train tracks with debris, and at a law firm on long island, cars got buried under mud and mulch when a huge retaining wall caved in. this neighborhood in howard beach, queens, got hit with a month's worth of rain in just 36 hours. some residents say the damage was worse than superstorm sandy. francis medina lost everything in her apartment under two feet of floodwater. >> you see, your property, you've lost your memories. it's horrible. >> reporter: her neighbors were up to their chest in sewer water. >> you had about six feet of water in here. >> yes. it was gushing. it knocked the refrigerator over. >> reporter: the floodwaters also damaged her disabled son's wheelchair, morning.

inmates say they smelled gas before the explosion tore through the building. omar villafranca reports from pensacola. >> reporter: investigators are combing the scene of an apparent natural gas explosion that collapsed part of the escambia county jail. the blast happened near the booking area. >> we're her for the purpose of getting to the bottom of it. the community deserves and the families and the victims deserve the answers. >> reporter: the jail houses 600 inmates. injured inmates were taken to nearby hospitals. relatives were angry they weren't getting answers soon enough. >> you couldn't tell me anything about my son and now you show up

nice for the media. a lot of damage to the jail is on the inside, but on the outside you can see where the explosion knocked down a wall, shattered windows, and damaged the facade. heavy rains have pounded pensacola area over the past few days. >> we certainly did not expect something of this magnitude just like we didn't expect to get 26 inches of rain in 12 hours. >> reporter: officials say the jail did flood during the storm. they're investigating if weather played any role in the explosion. omar villafranca, cbs news, pensacola, florida. a study this morning from the centers for disease control finds that 35% of premature deaths in the country are preventable. the report covers deaths from 2008 to 2010. the five leading causes of death o are heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, stroke, and accidental injuries. they account for 63% of deaths in the u.s. the study found 20% to 40% of

investors are waiting for the april jobs report this morning. yesterday the dow fell 21 points. the nasdaq gained 12 points. ford's ceo alan mulally is leaving early. mulally will retire july 1st instead of waiting till the end of the year as previously planned. he's credited with saving ford from financial ruin after being hired away from boeing in 2006. mulally will be replaced by ford's chief operating officer mark fields. the new security update for internet explorer. microsoft issued the fix to close a gap that allowed attackers to take complete control of a computer. it's also issuing the update to windows xp users despite dropping support for the older operating system last month. if you have automatic updates enabled, you don't need to take any action. and a groundbreaking spectacular in las vegas. bogging champ floyd mayweather made an entrance on a construction tractor as confetti filled the air.

rob ford, the embattled mayor of toronto, is now in the u.s. for treatment for substance abuse. he's taken a leave of absence to enter rehab following new allegations of drug abuse. danielle nottingham has the latest. >> reporter: toronto mayor rob ford was uncharacteristically quiet as he left his toronto home thursday morning for a private jet to chicago. ford is entering a rehab program after a second video surfaced allegedly showing the embattled politician smoking crack cocaine last saturday. toronto's "globe and mail" posted this snapshot of the footage from a self-professed drug dealer. ford announced wednesday he would take a leash of absence in a statement saying, i have a problem with alcohol and the choices i've made while under the influence. his older brother says their

a big increase in reports of sexual assaults in the u.s. military. military.3 the annual summary from the defense department says sexual assault reports were up 50% last year. 14% of the reports involved male victims. defense secretary chuck hagel says more victims have enough confidence in the system to report the attacks. for the first time, the federal government named colleges and universities that are fixing investigations into their handling of sexual assaults. maurice dubois has the story. >> reporter: across the country there's been a steady drumbeat of college students protesting what they call a lack of attention to sexual assaults on campuses. the government says one in five women will be sexually assaulted before graduation.

katherine laymen is from the department of education. >> the president and the vice president both strongly called for greater transparency and a movement across the country for us to change campus cultures so that we're making sure that all of our students are safe. >> reporter: the 55 schools publicly named span from coast to coast and include renowned institutions such as princeton, uc berkeley, vanderbilt, and harvard. all 55 are under investigation for violating title ix. that's the federal law requiring schools to advise victims of their rights, conduct investigations, and ensure victim safety. harvard has had 100 cases of sexual assault reported last three years. just last month a assaulted student wrote an open letter in the college newspaper saying our policy is so outdated and narrow in scope that it discourages survivors from entering into an gettive

process. sara is part of a title nine complaint. >> we should be equipping those students with what they need to know if it does happen. it's epidemic. there's students at other schools committing suicide because nobody's living to then. two days ago the white house announced plans to better educate universities on how to combat sexual violence on campus. victim advocates like colby bruno think more can be done. >> i'd like to see some other rules promulgated that hits the school where it hurts monetarily, and i think it would start to make schools pay attention to this. >> and you'd like to see consequences. >> i would like to see consequences. >> we want to be clear that the schools named here are under investigation and that does not mean they are guilty. in addition to harvard and emerson, we also contacted princeton, vanderbilt, and uc berkeley. all five universities told me they're fully cooperating with these investigations and are committed to improvement. maurice dubois, cbs news, new
